The reason for setting up Kera was pure and simple, to act as a watchdog and protect such a beautiful piece of land in the Kaiapoi East as a valuable public amenity that is available for all to wander and explore for a rural experience
As residents, we were becoming concerned that our democratic rights were being eroded and we were not being consulted on what was happening with the land usage as it was potentially being diverted from the agreed community consultation plans, especially since the Kaiapoi East Red Zone transitioned from Crown stewardship to that of the Waimarakiri District Council
The Kaiapoi East Amenity area has come about by the devastation of the 2010 earthquake and the loss of so many homes in the old “Golden Grove” subdivision.
The people of Kaiapoi and wider surrounds have waited nearly a decade for the transformation of the area, that adheres to the community consultation plan.
On a daily basis, people are exercising and freely roaming across the rural fields walking their dogs. Children and parents walking and on bikes, mums and grandmas with pushchairs and people on mobility scooters are using the formed pathway areas as part of their gentle exercise and mental health wellbeing programme.
Given the ageing population demographic which is expected to grow with new residents coming into the district in the next 20 years, our current older residents and others are making the most and enjoying the safe flat walking areas, with the added advantage of the stock bank to be able to get a different view of the river and surrounds.
The listed projects on the approved regeneration plan based on public consultation that have been completed included in the area are the new dog park, a great area to let your dog run free in a safe environment, a new BMX track for all ages, wide footpaths and narrow streets to encourage walking and sports grounds for softball.
One of the most precious areas yet not recognised as such is the area we call the Golden Grove Grassland, where you can just wander at your leisure, in the fields with trees that faithfully remind you the land you are walking on once stood a family home, with beautifully tended gardens and happy memories for so many.residents.
It has taken nearly a decade since that awful night on September 4th 2010, the public usage of this community amenity access is slowly increasing as the listed projects are completed.
Keeping the Kaiapoi East amenity as a free community reserve area as it is, is very much in keeping with the WDC district plan giving safe environments for people to exercise, walk and be accessed by all in the community. Be they young or old from all socio-economic levels of the community.
The need for a recreational area to be accessible for every person’s mental and physical wellbeing where there is ample space for all is one the priorities of KERA.
Our future plans are to enhance, beautify and protect the land with environmentally friendly improvements,
One of our goals is to promote the Kaiapoi East recreational amenity so that that brings visitors to our beautiful river township and encourage them to explore the wider township and frequent the businesses.
